From Lucca to Radicofani: a five-senses (and two wheels) journey along Via Francigena
“Take the first step on the way to Rome. It does not matter where you start from, nor does it count to be great athletes. Via Francigena is for everyone, and it is the historical itinerary that from the north of Europe led to the Eternal City. Set out and follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims who already descended the peninsula before the year 1000. They came from the British Isles, from the Kingdom of the Franks, from the farthest regions of the Empire. They passed the Alps to the Gran San Bernardo montain: through the passage of Val d’Aosta, the gates of the “Bel Paese” were opened for them with cities full of history and art.”
What better means of transport than bicycle to discover together the wonders that this timeless route has to offer? We will travel along one of the most evocative leg of Via Francigena in Tuscany, on a journey that will lead us through some of the most beautiful landscapes and villages in Italy: nature, history, art, typical flavors of a territory that will blow your mind. All at a slow pace, to immerse yourself totally in a unique experience that will awaken the true traveler in you. A five-senses journey.
DAY 1 - From Lucca to San Miniato
Flat stage where the greatest interest is represented by the numerous historical and religious buildings that can be encountered along the way: the city walls and the amphitheater of Lucca, Capannori church, Pozzeveri abbey, S. Jacopo church and Altopascio Old Town.
From Altopascio to Galleno we travel along a beautiful paved stretch of the ancient Via Francigena. In Ponte a Cappiano, inside the old Medici bridge, a hostel has been created. From here we go back to the interesting historic center of Fucecchio. After crossing Arno, we follow the riverbank for a short distance towards San Miniato.
DAY 2 - From San Miniato to San Gimignano
After Gambassi we ride up again until crossing the SP 4 Volterrana that we take towards San Gimignano, accompanied by the extraordinary beauty of the views of this area.
DAY 3 - From San Gimignano to Siena
Leaving behind Monteriggioni Old Town, we follow the white roads of the Sienese mountain range towards Cerbaia, an ancient medieval village that is now in a state of neglect. Shortly before arriving at Cerbaia we descend towards the nearby Cassia that we drive to Siena.
DAY 4 - From Siena to San Quirico d'Orcia
Behind us we can admire the profile of Siena, lying on the hills on the horizon.
Grancia di Cuna, an ancient fortified granary, is the main historical attraction of this leg. After the grange, we cross Monteroni d’Arbia and Ponte d’Arbia.
After Buonconvento, of which the Old Town is worth a visit, the climb begins. We follow the provincial road to Montalcino, which we leave to enter the dreamy landscapes of the Orcia Valley, along a path through white roads that leads us to Torrenieri. From here we use a stretch of the dismantled Cassia, unfortunately still paved, to reach San Quirico, which welcomes us with its splendid collegiate church.
DAY 5 - From San Quirico d'Orcia to Radicofani

- B&B, from the breakfast of the second day until the last one
